Solemn ceremonies next month will mark 80 years since 160,000 troops from Britain, the U.S., Canada and other nations landed in Normandy leading to the liberation of France and Europe from Nazi occupation.

A total of 4,414 Allied troops were killed on D-Day itself, including 2,501 Americans. More than 5,000 were wounded.

The official D-Day commemorations take place in Portsmouth and Normandy in June.
