The fight to save the African penguin | BBC News

Every year there are fewer African penguins and soon there may be none at all.

Conservationists primarily blame the fishing industry for the decline in numbers, as penguins depend on the sardines and anchovies they catch and sell.

But fishermen say they are “a fraction of the problem”, as there are there factors like climate change and vulnerability to natural predators involved.

While the South African government have previously tried to restrict fishing activities, it is estimated that there are now only 8,750 penguin breeding pairs left in the country.

This has led conservation groups to take legal action against the government in the first case of its kind in South Africa.
