STORYLINE:
For a third year running many Eastern Orthodox Christian Ukrainian soldiers are celebrating Easter on the front lines.
It’s a busy time of the year for members of the church, including frontline priests like Ivan, Chaplain of the 72 Mechanised Brigade of the Ukrainian Army,
After driving to a Ukrainian army position in Donetsk region in the dead of night, he held a short service with soldiers and blessed Easter cakes that would end up with troops in and around the frontlines.
Explosions were heard during the service but Priest Ivan didn’t stop praying.
He has been in the army since the beginning of the war in 2014.
"Our Lord Jesus Christ sacrificed himself for the sake of all humanity, for the sake of all people, just as Ukraine is now sacrificing itself for the sake of the whole world," he told the Associated Press.
