4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Abu Khalil, Gaza resident:
"When aid trucks arrive, we get little of it. We need more aid and we want the war to stop. Because if aid comes and the war is ongoing, it’s pointless. Conditions are difficult even though in the past they were more difficult, but it is still difficult today. In the past we used to collect wood because there was no cooking gas. We want to make fire but there isn’t room in the house. Now I am staying in other people’s house. How will I light a fire? Where do I get wood? Now somehow bread is available, and it is easier to get, but we don’t have access to everything and I am someone who has no income or job. I don’t have an income."

STORYLINE:
Abu Khalil rides his bicycle through the destruction of Gaza City to reach a bakery where he hopes to buy bread for his family.

The Palestinian, who has a family of 12, lives in a rented apartment after his home was partially destroyed by Israeli bombardment during the war.

Khalil’s daughter has cancer as well as medical problems in her trachea.

She used to go to Israel for treatment but now lives with her parents and her two children in the same house.

Khalil is the only breadwinner in the family, and he travels to the bakery almost every day so his family can eat.

Gaza City, in the northern part of the Gaza Strip, was the centre of fighting during the early days of the Israel-Hamas war and suffered widespread destruction.

On Friday, a U.N. official said that hard-hit northern Gaza was now in "full-blown famine" after more than six months of war and severe Israeli restrictions on food deliveries.

The World Food Program director became the most prominent international official so far to declare that civilians in the most cut-off part of Gaza were now facing famine.

But an Israeli humanitarian official on Saturday called the WFP official’s assertion incorrect and said Israel had been facilitating the delivery of more aid.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

The panel that serves as the internationally recognised monitor for food crises said in March that northern Gaza was on the brink of famine and likely to experience it in May.

Since March, it had not received anything like the aid needed to stave off famine, an Agency for International Development humanitarian official told The Associated Press.

The panel’s next update will not come before this summer.

The Israel-Hamas war broke on October 7, when Hamas militants attacked southern Israel killing 1,200 people and took 250 as hostages.

Israel has since launched an aerial and ground attack on the Gaza Strip killing over 34,500 people and causing wide destruction.
