STORYLINE:
Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado led a rally on Thursday before hundreds of people to gather support for the opposition candidate challenging President Nicolás Maduro in the upcoming election.

Venezuela’s main opposition bloc unanimously agreed recently to support low-profile Edmundo González as its challenger to Maduro in the July election.

But Gonzalez, a 74-year-old former diplomat, has no plans of rallying the country.

He leaves that job to Machado, the undisputed leader behind the ballot, who easily won an opposition primary last year but a ban against her blocks her candidacy.

The turnout at the rally in Maracaibo, the second most populated city in the country, was modest.

As Machado tours the country, her party Vente Venezuela has denounced the arrests of local leaders after a rally in Portuguesa state in recent days.

The government has accused the opposition and Machado of plotting to overthrow and even kill Maduro which has led to the arrest of more than 30 people since January, including a prominent human rights attorney and staffers of Machado’s party.
