6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ra’ed Fahmy, secretary of the Communist Party in Iraq:
"The workers’ demands are related to the implementation of labor law legislation. First, (they demand the) reopening closed factories, stopping the privatization process that is now spreading at the expense of national production, protecting national production, and consulting unions on legislation that concerns workers, especially the social security law."

STORYLINE:
Iraqi workers marched in Baghdad on Wednesday, demanding improvement of their conditions and respect to their rights.

Dozens took the street of the capital of Iraq to commemorate the International Workers’ Day.

Most of the protesters were members of Communist Party organizing the demonstration.

"(We demand) the fair right to a decent life for every worker," said Koeria al-Shaybanie, while marching with the group carrying banners and red flags.

The protesters also demanded better wages, the reopening of closed factories and the end to the privatization of several businesses.

Labor Day is observed in many countries around the world and is is an official public holiday in Iraq.
