STORYLINE:
May Day in Portugal had special significance this year, as it marked the 50th anniversary of when this day began to be celebrated freely, after an army coup brought democracy to the country.

Organised by the country’s main union, thousands of people marched, on Wednesday, through the center of the capital, Lisbon, chanting slogans calling for better working conditions, higher salaries as well as higher pensions.

Portugal’s minimum monthly wage is currently set at 820 euros.

During the past year, inflation has been an additional challenge for those already struggling.

Many participants wore red carnations, associated with the so-called Carnation Revolution of April 1974, which ended a stifling four-decade dictatorship established by Antonio Salazar.

In Portugal, it was only from May 1974 – the year of the 25th of April revolution – that May Day was freely celebrated again, and it became a public holiday.

During the dictatorship established by Salazar, the celebration of this day was repressed by the police.

Labor Day actions were limited to a few picnics and some pilgrimages to cemeteries in honour of the workers and activists who fell in the fight for their labour rights.

May Day is presently celebrated throughout Portugal, with demonstrations, rallies and parties, promoted mainly by the CGTP (General Confederation of Portuguese Workers) trade union.
