“A question that we, as obesity medicine physicians, are asked all the time is about when people can stop taking anti-obesity medications and what happens when they do stop anti-obesity medications. The bottom line is that obesity is a chronic disease, so it needs to be treated long term in order to be managed. When people stop an anti-obesity medication, we expect that their weight goes back up. Sometimes it happens right away. And sometimes people maintain that weight for longer, and then at some point they eventually start gaining and gaining.”

“We have patients tell us all the time that they want to stop taking their anti-obesity medications. As much as we educate them about obesity being a chronic disease, about needing to take medication or be on some form of medical intervention long term, people always want to stop for different reasons at different times. I would say two of the biggest reasons right now are cost – people who are paying out of pocket, it is just exorbitantly expensive – and two is supply. We have so many patients who have so much anxiety about whether or not they can get their next dose. And so patients get really tired of that.”
