"Heat season in the state of Florida is incredibly deadly for outdoor workers. We’re expected to see triple digit temperatures where the heat index can reach up to 120-125 degrees, which is, for many of these workers, a death sentence. And for counties and cities to basically be handcuffed and be unable to implement basic protections is incredibly cruel. And it’s incredibly dangerous as a public policy issue."

7. "I personally have suffered from heat stroke and dehydration. Not drastically, like other folks I’ve seen. But if you feel it, it feels horrible. And if you don’t take a break during that period, you can even die. And I’ve seen co-workers of mine who were dehydrated before being taken to the hospital.”

STORYLINE:
Workers held a march in Homestead, Florida, on Sunday against a new state law that bans local governments from requiring heat and water breaks for outdoor workers.

The law was signed earlier this month by Gov. Ron DeSantis and is expected to enter into force on July 1.

"The state legislation prohibits counties and cities from implementing basic heat protections like water breaks, like rest breaks, like shade for workers who work outside,” said Esteban Wood, policy director of WeCount, a worker’s rights organization that organized the march.

The organization had in recent years spearheaded the Que Calor campaign to enact heat protections for workers in Miami-Dade County.
