STORYLINE:
Hundreds attending an early May Day march in northern Israel on Saturday protested against the Israel-Hamas war and demanded an immediate Gaza cease-fire.
The protest in Nazareth was attended by members of the Communist party, the Hadash – a coalition of leftist parties – and Palestinians citizens of Israel.
The demonstrators demanded the parties involved in the conflict reach a deal to exchange the hostages still being held in Gaza for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons.
They also called on the Israeli government to respect the rights of workers and not make them pay the high price of the almost seven-months war.
Hamas sparked the war with its attack into southern Israel on Oct. 7, in which militants killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took some 250 people as hostages.
Israel says the militants are still holding around 100 hostages and the remains of more than 30 others.
At least 34,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s offensive, around two-thirds of them children and women, according to the Health Ministry in Hamas-run Gaza.
