Royalty attend Bicentenary of Battle of Waterloo

(18 Jun 2015) On the day of the 200th anniversary of Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo, the royal families of the Netherlands, United Kingdom, France and Prussia joined hands as an display of peace.

On the same ground where the Allies of Netherlands, United Kingdom and Prussia ended the Napoleonic wars leaders spoke about what grew from that moment.

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said, “What we need to commemorate in Waterloo is the rising importance of the European Community.”

First Vice-President of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, said, “Historic events transcend space and time. What happens in one part of Europe affects us all. What happens in one century continues to have an impact in the next. This was true 200 years ago. This is still true today.”
