""The jury is set for Donald Trump’s first criminal trial, the hush money case in Manhattan, the borough of New York City where he gained famed and fortune. Trump was in court watching as 12 Manhattan residents and a couple alternates where chosen for this historic trial. It’s the first of his four criminal indictments to go before a jury."

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael R. Sisak, The Associated Press:
"The jurors were chosen in what was essentially a process of elimination. They answered a questionnaire probing their background, their political beliefs, their news diet and whether they could be fair and impartial during questioning. One of the people that made the jury said he found Donald Trump fascinating, in part because Trump could walk into a room and had an effect on people, whether good or bad. Nevertheless, that juror said he could be fair and impartial, and would only judge this case based on the evidence presented in court."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael R. Sisak, The Associated Press:
"This trial arises from allegations that Donald Trump mischaracterized payments he made to his former lawyer, Michael Cohen. Cohen was involved in what prosecutors say was a hush money scheme to keep porn actor Stormy Daniels quiet about an alleged sexual encounter she says she had with Trump in 2006. Daniels was ready to come forward with those allegations right before the 2016 presidential election. And according to prosecutors, Trump and his allies feared that that would damage his chances to win the race."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael R. Sisak, The Associated Press:
"Now that the jury is set, the trial will move on to opening statements and then the first witnesses testifying in court."

STORYLINE:
A jury has been selected for former President Donald Trump’s hush money trial in Manhattan.
After both sides grilled the jury pool about their social media posts, political views and personal lives , they now have 12 person jury and alternates.
The trial is a moment of reckoning for Trump, who has tried to put off his prosecutions until after the November election and casts himself as the victim of a politically motivated justice system.
The trial puts Trump’s legal problems at the center of his closely contested race against President Joe Biden.
It’s the first of Trump’s four criminal cases to reach trial, and it may be the only one to return a verdict before voters decide whether to elect the presumptive GOP presidential nominee.
Trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records as part of an alleged effort to keep salacious — and, he says, bogus — stories about his sex life from emerging during his 2016 campaign.
The trial is expected to last for six weeks.
