RR8001 NICARAGUA: AFTER THE REVOLUTION

(4 Jan 1980) ROVING REPORT 8001: NICARAGUA: AFTER THE REVOLUTION

Background to Story: Nicaragua has had a revolutionary government since
July 1979, when the Sandinista guerrillas forced the military-backed Somoza
himself to go into exile. The new government of national reconstruction has
promised no severe reprisals against its former enemy, the National Guard.
But it faces a big task in getting the country back on its feet. The economy
had been left in ruins, with large foreign debts, and with the industrial and
agricultural infrastructure severely damaged. This report looks back briefly at
the revolutionary struggle and backgrounds the current scene, including the Cuban
presence that is worrying some western governments.
