4. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President:
"We need to adapt and expand them (sanctions) on Iran. We need to go further than what is already implemented. I will defend that tonight during this Council, this is what I pleaded for during the G7 on Sunday afternoon. We are in favour of sanctions also targeting those who are helping the creation of missiles and drones that were used during the attack overnight from last Saturday to last Sunday. And which are also being used in Ukraine. So our duty is to expand those sanctions focalised on the Tehran regime."

STORYLINE:
French President Emmanuel Macron called on Wednesday for more sanctions against Teheran and "those who are helping the creation of missiles and drones" that the country used in its unprecedented attack on Israel.

Speaking ahead of a meeting with his EU counterparts in Brussels, Macron said that the current sanctions against Iran should be further adapted and expanded.

European leaders’ discussions at a summit in Brussels is set to focus on the bloc’s competitiveness in the face of increased competition from the United States and China.

Tensions in the Middle East and the ongoing Russian military operation in Ukraine will be at the heart of Wednesday evening’s talks on foreign affairs.

As the unprecedented attack by Iran on Israel ratcheted up regional tensions and raised fears of a wider war, EU leaders have been urging restraint in Israel’s response and de-escalation of tension in the region.
