"The inspiration behind MENA (Middle East and North African) fest was really rooted in Opa-locka’s rich heritage, architecturally speaking. So the buildings that we have to offer the public that we proudly display and are currently restoring is very much indicative of the thrill, the excitement behind what this place was intended to be during the 1920s, and certainly what it can be moving forward in the near future."

"Actually as soon as I walked into the festival, I went up to a table of some Lebanese people and they offered me samples of everything without even having to pay for it first, which is definitely new for me at these kinds of events, but they were really eager to share their culture with me. I got to try some Lebanese lemonade, and some baba ghanoush, which I think I like more than hummus now."

"This community has been through a lot, but we’re working our way out into a brighter future, to say the least. An event like this brings everyone together, both Opa-lockans and the region, to see what we have going on, and very much an annual occurrence of this event will help instil that value and certainly be a draw for people to come out and enjoy."

STORYLINE:
Opa-locka is a city in South Florida whose downtown is crowned by minarets, Islamic arches and date palms.
Located just outside Miami, the city was founded in 1926 by a pioneer aviator by the name of Glenn Curtiss who developed its buildings with Middle Eastern architectural elements inspired by the One Thousand and One Nights, a collection of Arab folktales.
Now residents are celebrating the city’s heritage with a festival dedicated to the cultures of the Middle East and North Africa.
Van Mecl hopes to turn the festival into an annual event to build a following that would uplift the city with funding and attention.
