Anatomy Of An Explosion: How Beirut was destroyed

In August, nearly 3,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate exploded in Lebanon’s capital city. We mapped video footage of the blast, to understand its scale – and the impact it’s had on local people. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)

We spoke to the people who filmed the explosion, which killed more than 200 people. They include a bride who was having wedding photos taken when the blast happened.

Elsewhere in the city, another woman was giving birth at the local hospital – her baby spent its first hours in a disaster zone. And right near the stash of ammonium nitrate, restaurant staff were knocked over by the pressure.

But this is just the latest crisis for Lebanon – which was already suffering from a financial crash, widespread protests and accusations of political corruption.

Now, many people have blamed this latest disaster on the government, for systemic incompetence and corruption.
