"There’re so many reasons. I think genuinely just for your mental health. For your mental health, it is the best thing in the world. I’ve done loads of therapy, I’ve done lots of stuff like that. But I’ve never felt anything is physically changing as saunas and ice baths. I don’t know what it is. It just it’s so relaxing and beautiful and just lovely."

"And I tried to stop drinking for a prolonged period of time last year. And so, I’ve really kind of found solace, I guess, coming here and being able to have another place that isn’t just going for a drink or a walk, which we love walking, but it’s nice to have another option to do."

"But once you come in and you feel it and you feel the effect of the hot and the cold and that rush and the feel good factor, people are sold. And the health benefits are becoming more and more apparent. Lots of peer reviewed studies around depression, cardiovascular benefits, dementia, the list goes on. So as far as we’re concerned, as a social enterprise, it’s booming. There’s lots of money coming into it. We want to make sure it’s available for all communities. Everyone has access to it and they can afford it. That’s why we’re linking up with the NHS (National Health Service), with local health authorities and other organizations, community organizations, to make sure this is available and accessible for all."

LEADIN:

Sauna-bathing is taking off as a hot new trend in the UK.

Sauna sites have more than tripled in the last two years as young people look for healthier ways to enjoy themselves.

STORYLINE:

The depths of winter and people are out in their swimwear to enjoy the toasty confines of a sauna.

But this is not Scandinavia, or the hot springs of Japan, or Native American sweat lodges.

This is London, UK – where saunas are not a traditional part of the culture.

But they are fast becoming the hot trend here, particularly among 20- and 30-somethings.

Temperatures reach 90 degrees Celsius (194 Fahrenheit) inside.

Visitor Callum Heinrich cools down with a dip in an ice bath after.

"For your mental health, it is the best thing in the world. I’ve done loads of therapy, I’ve done lots of stuff like that. But I’ve never felt anything is physically changing as saunas and ice baths. I don’t know what it is. It just it’s so relaxing and beautiful and just lovely," he says.

Around the U.K., the number of public sauna sites has jumped from 45 in 2023 to 147 so far this year, according to the British Sauna Society.

These new young sauna aficionados are keen to try a pastime that’s healthier than nights out in pubs and bars.

Health benefits aren’t yet well established — and those with high blood pressure or heart conditions should check with their doctors before going to a sauna and ice bath.

Two more are opening soon.
