"I’m not commenting on all the negative stuff that he (Trump) says. I will write a comment on the positive things that he says, and the latest thing that he came up with on Truth Social is that he respects our right to self-determination. If we want to join the USA, that’s the largest value that the United States can offer any other country. So he wants to invest in Greenland, he is absolutely welcome to do that."

STORYLINE:
The center-right Demokraatit Party has won Greenland’s election, a result that suggests the public voted on social issues over President Donald Trump’s stated goal of taking control of the island "one way or the other.”

Both Demokraatit — the Democrats — and the second placed party, Naleraq — or Point of Orientation — favour independence from Denmark.

The unanticipated result came after huge crowds streamed into the polling station in the capital, Nuuk, throughout the day, warmed by sunny skies.

Exhausted voting officials closed the polls well after the planned 8 p.m. local time (2200 GMT) to make sure everyone in line got a chance to cast their ballot.

Unofficial election results should be available in the coming hours, but they won’t be certified for weeks as paper ballots make their way to the capital from remote settlements by boat, plane and helicopter.
