"We came today with a delegation from Lattakia Governorate to deliver a message to the people inside the Hmeimim base, that the situation outside has become safe, with many security forces spreading and securing the area. Most of the regions in the city’s mountains, countryside, and Al-Fardaha have been cleared. We wanted to send them a reassuring message so they can understand the reality of the situation outside and not receive inaccurate information. We have now evacuated some of the injured, and they are being taken by ambulance behind us. We also helped in the evacuation of families, one after another."

STORYLINE:
Injured people were being evacuated on Tuesday from a coastal air base in Syria that was used as a refuge during the recent regional violence in the country.
Ambulances and aid trucks were seen entering the Hmeimim base, where Syrian Arab Red Crescent staff were evacuating wounded people to take them to a hospital in nearby Latakia.
Sectarian violence broke out in the country following clashes between government-linked forces and groups associated with deposed President Bashar Assad.
Monitoring groups said hundreds of civilians were killed in revenge attacks in coastal communities, primarily targeting members of the Alawite religious minority to which Assad belongs.
Some families took refuge in the Russian air base in the coastal province of Latakia.
Amjad Sultan, a local official , who came with a delegation bringing aid to the base, said they were trying to “bring a message to the people in Hmeimim that the situation outside has become safe and the security forces have spread out to control the area."
But many of the families remained unconvinced.
In Jableh, people were beginning to return to the streets, although many stores remained shuttered.
“Thank God, today life has returned, and people have gone back to their homes. Everything is, thank God, perfectly fine,” said resident Mohammad al-Hamoud.
“We want safety and security, and to return as one family, just as we were before, against sectarianism and against anyone who speaks about sectarianism," he added.
