STORYLINE:
Paris has spoken, and fashion’s final authority has laid down the law: This coming fall, it’s all about power shoulders, enveloping outerwear, and a color palette that runs the gamut from somber to surreal.
If the Milanese softened up with romance and New York went hard on Y2K grunge, Paris countered with a sense of sartorial surety—a wardrobe built for the sharp, the serious, and the spectacular. Coats are enormous, tailoring is back in play, and the drama is dialed up on every front. From rich, painterly hues to a new approach to everyday luxury, here’s what ruled the runways.
And while these trends may start in the rarefied world of the luxury runway, they will trickle down with lightning speed to the high street, as fast fashion giants like Zara, H&M and Shein race to translate runway spectacle into wearable, mass-market hits.
Coats so big they might eat you
Shoulders wide enough to rival a Renaissance painting
Power shoulders are officially back, and they mean business. At Givenchy, Sarah Burton’s debut delivered tailored coats with razor-sharp shoulders, softened only by their impeccable drape. Victoria Beckham elongated and exaggerated the shoulder line on her signature evening silhouettes, creating a confident, statuesque effect. Loewe’s Jonathan Anderson, ever the master of subversion, played with distorted proportions, adding surrealist twists to an already commanding frame. The message? Whether you’re in a power suit or a party dress, take up space.
