"How could I agree with any compromise after what they have done? They (the Russians) come here to kill. And they would continue to kill us, to try to kill us. No matter how the negotiations end, we have to show Russians where their place is. Otherwise, the war would go on. I will never forgive Russia for what it did.”
7. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Oleksandr (no last name given), Ukrainian soldier:
"If there is a ceasefire, it would only give Russia time to increase its firepower, manpower, missiles, and other arms. Then they would attack Ukraine again. So we simply cannot speak about decreasing our defense or making any compromises over our territory.”
8. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Radyk (no last name given), Ukrainian soldier with amputated feet:
"If Russia remains unpunished, they will proceed to kill us and or attack other countries as well.”

"We had massive losses during this war and we don’t know yet how many more we’ll have. That’s why I think we have to make some kind of compromise in order to end this. We are suffering every day. Our kids are suffering and we don’t know how the future generation will be affected. We will have to rebuild this country. So I think we have to make a compromise. But a reasonable one.”

STORYLINE:
Ukrainians in Kyiv expressed mixed feelings about talks that kicked off Tuesday between Ukraine and the United States on how to end Russia’s three-year war.

The talks in the Saudi city of Jeddah come after President Donald Trump paused U.S. military aid to Ukraine last week, along with some intelligence sharing, in an attempt to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to engage in negotiations to end the war against Russia.

In Kyiv, Radyk, a 22-year-old Ukrainian soldier who lost both of his feet said he was opposed to any compromise.

"How could I agree with any compromise after what they have done? They come here to kill," he told the Associated Press.

"No matter how the negotiations end, we have to show Russians where their place is,” said the soldier, who did not give his surname.

His comrade Oleksandr, who also declined to give his last name, said he expected Russia to take advantage of any ceasefire to rearm.

"Then they would attack Ukraine again," he said.
