"So since since we returned to the table yesterday, we made, we made a progress with, with the university. It’s not a significant progress. At least we are discussing some some real demands. As I said, with number two, there’s, with with with our demands regarding financial disclosure, there’s some progress in that and some areas regarding the statement of, of the president. There’s some progress and as well other, other, other areas. However, our main demand, which is divestment from from the Israeli occupation, there’s an impasse in that."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Mahmoud Khalil, lead negotiator, Columbia University Apartheid Divest:
"The university led us to lead us to this situation, unfortunately, through bringing the police here. That was the last thing that the students wanted, that the faculty wanted that, was very evident today. And the faculty walkout in support of those students who were unjustly suspended who were also arrested by NYPD. . Now, the climate on campus has changed. A lot of students before, they were scared of the university intimidation tactics because the university has used and has unleashed a lot of scary tactics. They would send students emails and at 9 p.m. to come into investigation, and the second day for certain events, they would send them, notices of interim suspension. They would evict them from their apartments. That happened with a good number of students."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Mahmoud Khalil, lead negotiator, Columbia University Apartheid Divest:
"So that’s what the university did. They kind of played – they meant business, by, like, having that, like, strong, bringing strong, I would say, just like, not not the police, but like the institution against the students, and this kind of in a way, scared a lot of students to join the movement. If you noticed the first day when the students were in at the lawn of this university before the police came and arrested them that were about 100 students inside. Today, as we can see, there’s much more than that. The university climate has changed. And now we are more and more confident that we would be able to achieve our demands."

STORYLINE:
A prominent Palestinian activist who helped lead last spring’s protests at Columbia University has been arrested by federal immigration agents.

Mahmoud Khalil’s lawyer says he was arrested at his apartment near the university by agents who claimed they were acting on a State Department order to revoke his green card.

Khalil, who graduated in December, was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and was being held at an immigration detention center in New Jersey.

His wife, who is eight months pregnant, says authorities did not explain why he was being detained.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson has confirmed Khalil’s arrest, describing it as supporting President Trump’s executive orders prohibiting anti-Semitism.
