So we’re really, really looking to Europe right now to see if we could establish a stronger bond with them to secure our sovereign nation."

"Because we don’t want to colonized twice again from another nation. So we have all the time said that we want to have business with other countries but not (ownership). Because we live in the democratic country, andwe mean that it will be unrespectful (disrespectful) to just to do that."

"But I think what he (Trump) is interested in here is more like the underground that we have, the minerals. He’s interested for not the people, not the beauty of it but more like what kind of money he thinks he can get out of it, I think. So it worries me because I’m not anti-American or anything but it’s like it doesn’t seem that we have a say in it. It’s like he says we’re going to take over no matter what. But we’re a democratic country, we’re free people so it’s worrying I think."

STORYLINE:
When U.S. President Donald Trump first suggested buying Greenland in 2019, people thought it was a joke. No one is laughing now.

Amid concerns about foreign interference and demands that Greenlanders must control their own destiny, the island’s prime minister Múte Bourup Egede called early parliamentary elections for March 11.

Political candidates made their final bids in a televised debate in Nuuk on Saturday, covered by an unprecedented amount of foreign media.

Pipaluk Lynge, from the ruling Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA) party, said a lot of people are scared of Trump’s proposition to buy Greenland.

"Control and ownership – using those words, we haven’t heard from alliances before. So we’re really, really looking into Europe right now to see if we could establish a stronger bond with them to secure our sovereign nation," said Lynge.

Doris Jensen, from the Siumut party, said after seeing Trump’s actions on the world stage, especially in relation to Ukraine and Gaza, she is more concerned about the future of Greenland.
