STORYLINE:
Eurostar trains to London and all trains heading to northern France have been halted following the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb near the tracks.
France’s national train operator, SNCF, announced that traffic at the Gare du Nord would be suspended until mid-morning Friday at the request of police.
"We invite travelers to postpone their trip," the statement read.
The Gare du Nord is a major European transit hub, and while unexploded ordnance from World War I or II is regularly found across France, it is rare to discover such devices in highly populated areas.
Travellers at the station expressed frustration and uncertainty.
Jonas Gabler from Berlin, who was traveling to London for a musical concert on Saturday, said, they had just arrived at the station to learn about the news,
"Apparently, they found a bomb, and trains won’t depart until 10 a.m., maybe even all day. Now we were going to see if we stay for another night or maybe try to catch a train later in the day."
Lexie, a U.S. tourist from South Carolina traveling to Brussels, shared, "I was going to meet my friend in Brussels, but obviously the trains are all delayed, and my train was at 07:23, but now I don’t know when it will be."
Florian Sonthonnax, who was planning a weekend trip to London, said he had rescheduled his train was waiting to see if it would depart.
