STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Ukrainians have knelt on one knee to pay their respects at the coffin of Vasyl Ratunshnyy in Kiyv’s main central square Wednesday.
A sombre funeral ceremony and procession led by Vasyl’s former military comrades snaked its way from St. Michael’s Cathedral to Independence Square where family and friends could say one last goodbye.
Under the watchful eyes of his mother and father, mourners left flowers and said prayers for the Ratushnyys and their second son to have died in the war with Russia.
The 28-year-old was killed in action earlier this year on the 27th February. His younger brother Roman, perished in the early days of the war when he was killed on 9 June 2022.
In similar scenes to the first funeral, hundreds attended Vasyl’s service, and after it, Taras Ratushnyi, father of Vasyl, spoke to those in attendance and said, "when talking about the future and thinking about the future, the only thing that mattered was how many enemies will be destroyed. To inflict such losses on the enemy and stop his advance for at least some time."
Roman Ratushnyy came to prominence, after protesting for months alongside demonstrators that toppled Ukraine’s pro-Russia leader in 2014. He took up arms when Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of its neighbour in 2022.
His shortened life symbolised that of Ukraine’s post-independence generations that are sacrificing their best years for their country.
First, with defiance and dozens of lives against brutal riot police during Ukraine’s Maidan protests of 2013-2014 and now with weapons and even more lives against Russian troops.
Elsewhere in Ukraine, the country’s armed forces are still battling to slow Russia’s advances along the 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front line, especially in the eastern Donetsk region.
Tens of thousands of soldiers and more than 12,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed since Russia invaded in 2022.
