"It’s hard to say what’s going to happen, but we’ve had customers tell us that a few customers wanted to close their accounts, few customers said that they may not see us again anytime soon, and then other customers have said they’re canceling their trips to the US. So we know. Things are going to slow down."

STORYLINE:
A drop in Canadian travelers to border town, American wine off a Canadian supermarket and uncertainty of what’s going to happen are some of the immediate impacts echoing throughout the British Columbia and Washington state border as President Donald Trump’s tariffs take effect.
In White Rock, British Columbia, local resident Ted Eitel said he has stopped traveling to the U.S. for errands, canceled a camping trip and is not considering traveling to see the Blue Jays baseball team in Seattle.
"Why should I be helping the U.S. economy when they’re doing all these bad things to us?" he said.
Trump’s 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico went into effect Tuesday, along with a heightened 20% levy on Chinese goods. In response, all three countries announced retaliatory measures.
For Kelle Hagen, the tariffs are the latest setback after barely making it through the border shutdown during the COVID pandemic. Hagen runs a shipping and mailbox service for Canadians in Blaine, Washington.
Hagen added that it’s clear there are less Canadian travelers passing through the town since tensions rose.
