“The (giant puppet) of Trump actually was made during his election against Hillary Clinton. We made both of them. To our surprise, he won, and we left him there at the Embassy (of Giant Puppets). And because he is, let’s say, charismatic and controversial, he always attracted a lot of attention."

STORYLINE:
An oversized puppet of U.S. President Donald Trump paraded in Brazil’s northeastern city of Olinda in the final days of carnival festivities.

Satirizing political figures and celebrities, the giant puppets are a key part of Olinda’s vibrant carnival, drawing thousands of locals and tourists every year.

Followed by revellers dancing to the rhythm of traditional carnival marchinhas, they filled the narrow and colourful streets of the town with their faces humorously exaggerated.

Next to Trump, there were figures of the Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres, nominated for an Oscar for the movie ‘I’m Still Here,’ and soccer players like Pelé and Messi.

The giant puppets of Olinda have their origins in medieval European tradition, and have been part of the city’s tradition since 1932.

Currently, the giant puppets remain on display throughout the year at the Embassy of Giant Puppets of Olinda, ran by cultural producer Leandro Castro, who created the Puppet of Trump during his first election campaign against Hillary Clinton.
