"This is my second time in New Orleans visiting from New York. Sad that people lost their lives but now there’s such a strong police presence that I’m sure it’s not going to happen again at least for the foreseeable future."

"It’s just sad. We’ve heard a lot of people say they’re not coming down because they’re just too afraid. I haven’t felt that at all. I’ve felt really fine. You know, there’s a lot of security. I see a lot of police, state police; I saw some reserves. It just feels very safe but it’s overwhelming. It’s sad but I also, I don’t want to operate out of fear. I want to enjoy life but I think we also need to not forget and pay tribute and make sure this kind of stuff doesn’t happen again."

STORYLINE:
Following the Jan. 1 truck attack that killed 14 people in the heart of New Orleans, the Department of Homeland Security upgraded Mardi Gras to its highest risk rating.
This means there will be significantly more law enforcement officers present than in prior years, said Eric DeLaune, who is leading Mardi Gras security as special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in New Orleans.
In uptown, where Shannon Fristoe set up to see the parades, extra barricades and concrete barriers have been deployed along historic St. Charles Avenue.
"That really makes me feel better", she said.
Meanwhile in downtown New Orleans, numerous law enforcement officers can be seen at nearly every intersection of the French Quarter as tourists walk past what is left of a memorial on Bourbon Street honoring the 14 victims from the New Year’s deadly attack.
Deenah Givens says she wants to enjoy her time here and not operate out of fear, "I want to enjoy life but I think we also need to not forget and pay tribute and make sure this kind of stuff doesn’t happen again."
