RR7048B SOUTH AFRICA: THE LAST DIAMOND RUSH?
Probably the last great South African diamond rush
happened at Swartrand – Black Ridge Farm some 100
miles west of Johannesburg. A crowd of 5,000
gathered to watch as 167 diggers waited to hear their
name read out before speeding off into the veldt to
stake their claims. Licences to dig for diamonds are
rare and are inherited rather than bought. In fact, the
days of the lonely digger, armed only with pick, shovel
and boundless optimism, are numbered. Even at
Swartrand, the richest pickings are likely to go to the
two men who are working their claims on an industrial
scale, using machinery rather than muscle power.
This is excellent film of an event which may well never
be repeated.
