STORYLINE:
Four of Rio’s top samba schools took center stage on the opening night of Carnival parades on Sunday.

The Brazilian city’s famous Sambadrome was filled with color and sound as glamorously dressed performers topped elaborate parade floats.

The Unidos de Padre Miguel samba school was back in the top league after almost 60 years years away.

“We will not let you down, you can be sure of that,” the school’s president Lenilson Leal said.

Together with the second school, Imperatriz Leopoldinense, they brought themes heavily inspired by the Afro-Brazilian religion Candomblé, telling stories of deity’s and important figures like Iyá Nassô, the founder of one of the oldest Candomblé temples in the country.

Last year’s champions Unidos do Viradouro were the third school, followed by Estação Primeiro de Mangueira in Sunday’s final slot.

Previously spread over two days with six schools per parade, the ‘special group’ now extends over three days, featuring four schools each night.

Rio’s Sambadrome has been home to the parade since the 1980s, and is a symbol of Brazil’s Carnival festivities.
