6. SOUNDBITE (English) Cardinal Stephen Brislin, Archbishop of Johannesburg:
“Since he’s been in hospital, people have been truly concerned about him, truly worried about him, and they have been praying for him. But in this time of uncertainty, not knowing what precisely is going to happen, we thought it would be good to gather people together so that we could do a very formal act of the church, the Catholic Church in Johannesburg, of dedicating time to pray for Pope Francis. And that’s what we did this morning. And I think you will agree that people really responded and came out in their numbers in order simply to show this solidarity and their support for Pope Francis at this critical time.”

STORYLINE:
The newly-appointed Archbishop of Johannesburg, Cardinal Stephen Brislin, led dozens of South African Catholic worshippers in a prayer service on Sunday dedicated to Pope Francis’s health and recovery as he battles double pneumonia.
Well-wishers of all ages attended the two-hour service at the Cathedral of Christ the King in central Johannesburg.
Brislin highlighted the public’s concern for Francis since his hospitalisation, noting that South Africa and the people of the African continent share a deep connection and affection for him.
Although Francis has never visited South Africa, Breslin said the pontiff had warmly received the South African delegation during their last two visits to the Vatican.
The pontiff was also among the first international leaders to express sorrow and condolences after a fire in a building in Johannesburg killed more than 70 people in 2023.
Expressing hope for the Pope’s recovery, the archbishop stressed the importance of continuing Francis’ teachings of compassion and care for the vulnerable.
"The reaction to his illness throughout the world shows how much he has meant to the world, and not to just to the Catholic Church, but that people have really recognised in him a strong leader of integrity and honesty, and a person not afraid to speak the truth,” he said.
