STORYLINE:
Muslims in Myanmar’s largest-city of Yangon, gathered on Sunday to break their fast as they marked the first day of the holy month of Ramadan.
Hundreds of people assembled inside the Nwe Aye Mosque in the Dawbon township, to pray and to share free soup.
Muslims see Ramadan as a time of religious reflection and worship, charity, and community, as they fast from sunrise until sunset.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar; the month cycles through the seasons.
The start of the month traditionally depends on the sighting of the crescent moon.
The actual start date may vary among Muslim communities due to declarations by multiple Islamic authorities around the globe on whether the crescent has been sighted or different methodologies used to determine the start of the month.
Myanmar is a mostly Buddhist country.
Muslims constitute about 4.3 percent of the total population.
