STORYLINE:
The Al-Boneih charity kitchen initiative in Yemen’s capital continued providing breakfast for fasting people for the sixth year on Saturday.

The charity kitchen has been providing free meals to those fasting during the holy month of Ramadan, extending a lifeline to people in need.

Volunteers toil in the kitchen cooking food in massive pots to feed hundreds of people every day.

Organizer Hamada al-Beleih says the initiative started in 2016 and provided 100 meals a day at the time.

Now it provides 1,500.

During Ramadan, mosques and charities regularly provide meals for the poor as initiatives like the Sanaa charity kitchen spring up across the region.

Markets in Yemeni cities, including Sanaa, are experiencing stagnation due to declining incomes and rising prices.

"They used to buy by the container (30 kg) but now they buy by the kilogram or even a quarter of a kilogram," said shopkeeper Asaad Ghallab.

"May God have mercy on the citizens, many do not have salaries," he added.

People have been affected by the fluctuation and variation in prices due to the war, which began in 2014 when the Houthis swept down from their northern stronghold and seized the capital, Sanaa, along with much of the country’s north.
