"This Ramadan, I lost my home and I lost the most important thing, which is my husband and my daughter’s husband. They are the most important things, then the home. I and the girls live. I am forced to enter the house because I have no other shelter. I am forced. If I was not forced, I would not have lived in it. But where do I go? "

8. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Fatima Al-Absi, Jabaliya resident:
"This Ramadan is sad. Look at the destruction, the martyrs are still under the rubble, they didn’t all get them out. Even my husband was martyred, I lost him. I remember him every moment, every minute, in every prayer. When you sit at the table and he’s not there. We used to wait for him, we would break our fast with dates until he finished the Maghrib prayer in the mosque and come back to break our fast together. Now, what a pity, there is no one to wait for, whether it’s my husband or my daughter’s husband, may God have mercy on them."

10. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Fatima Al-Absi, Jabaliya resident:
"We are afraid that the war will return. We don’t want war, we want peace and security. We want nothing but peace and security, and for all countries to stand with us. We are afraid that the war will return again, oh God, don’t let it return and we won’t see it. Those we lost and left are enough."

Until God makes things easier, thank God, because I have no one to help me at home and there is no money or salaries, there is nothing."

STORYLINE:
Before the Israel-Hamas war, the Muslim holy month of Ramadan was a festive time of increased worship, social gatherings and cheer for Fatima Al-Absi.

Together with her husband, the resident of Jabaliya in Gaza said she used to do Ramadan shopping, visit relatives and head to the mosque for prayers.

But the war has shredded many of the familiar and cherished threads of Ramadan as Al-Absi once knew it: her husband and a son-in-law have been killed, her home was damaged and burnt and the mosque she attended during Ramadan destroyed, she said.

"We are afraid that the war will return," Al-Absi said.
