STORYLINE:
The Greasing of the Poles in New Orleans kicks off the city’s big Mardi Gras weekend.
The ritual, which first started more than fifty years ago, consists of a select few community members greasing balcony poles of the Royal Sonesta hotel in the French Quarter to deter revelers from climbing up to the coveted balcony space.
Judges give scores based on how well each contestant greases their balcony pole.
Lauren Haydel, founder of the New Orleans clothing store Fleurty Girl, was named winer of the 2025 contest.
