China has said its economy is expected to grow by 5% this year, despite the impact of a worsening trade war with the United States. Premier Li Qiang announced the forecast at the opening session of China’s National People’s Congress. The gathering of around 3,000 delegates is a largely ceremonial event to rubber-stamp approval to decisions made by the ruling Communist Party. Yet it does give some indication of Chinese leadership’s priorities.
