"We did the first test and were told that we had deficiencies that would effect 800 apartments out of over 1400. We talked to the state, talked to the city, talked to our elected officials, and ‘we don’t have money to fix our gas lines.’ At the same time we heard, through friends in the energy community about the Copper stoves and we said that’s the direction that we’re going to go rather than fixing gas."

For 47 million American households, cooking means a gas stove.
Gas stoves generate gases that aren’t good for people’s health and the gas itself contributes to climate change.
In the United States switching can be expensive, but a new stove can plug into regular household electricity circuit, reducing installation costs and with no harmful emissions.
STORYLINE:
Blue gas flames flicker on in millions of New York kitchens, but in the Bronx, one stove powers up with a magnetic field.
Unlike gas stoves, this induction model plugs into a standard outlet meaning costly rewiring and no harmful emissions.
Gas leaks have long plagued older buildings, forcing expensive repairs, while gas stoves release pollutants linked to asthma and climate change.
A Bronx co-op and public housing agencies in New York and California are testing these new stoves, drawn to their safety, efficiency, and ease of use.
Ed Yaker is showing off his new stove at his Bronx apartment.
It’s a sleek, standard four-burner electric induction stove that runs on 120-volt wiring, meaning it can plug into a regular outlet.
Yaker is the treasurer at his 1486-unit co-op and he and other board members constantly dealing with gas leaks that would bring out gas company technicians to shut down entire apartment buildings.
Residents could face months without use of a stove until expensive repairs were made to the gas lines.
The research on the health effects of cooking with gas has been building.
