Indonesia, home to the world’s largest Muslim population, is welcoming Ramadan with vibrant traditions.

From torchlight parades to music and dance, communities have come together to mark the start of the holy month.

STORYLINE:

Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country and the largest archipelago, welcomes Ramadan with a variety of traditions.

From torchlight parades to cleaning relatives’ graves and sharing meals with family and friends, each region has its own way of marking the start of the Islamic holy month.

In Tangerang, a city just outside the capital Jakarta, hundreds of men, women, and children gather along the side of the road on Wednesday evening.

They prepare to take part in Tarhib Ramadan, a traditional event held annually to welcome the fasting month.

A man lights torches one by one, their flames illuminating the night. Another distributes them to participants.

The steady beat of a drum echoes through the streets as musicians prepare for the procession.

The rhythmic pounding is soon joined by the bright sounds of trumpets and the rebana, an Arabic handheld percussion instrument.

The parade begins.

People walk together through the narrow, crowded streets of the densely populated neighbourhood, carrying torches and singing Islamic songs.

Among them is Samsul Anwar, villager who is walking alongside his wife, Rekanita Amelia Yusuf, and their eight-year-old adopted son, Argha Al Khawarizmi.

The Chinese Indonesian community also joins in.

Torches burn brightly as the procession continues.
