STORYLINE:
Markets are buzzing with shoppers in Indian-controlled Kashmir as Muslims prepare for the holy month of Ramadan, a time of prayers and lavish food preparations.
In Srinagar, the region’s largest city, streets are full of people buying dates, raisins and fruit.
Shopkeepers say the collections of dates, including those imported from Palestine, Iran and other countries, are very popular with buyers.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar involving dawn to dusk fasting but it is also marked by festivities, delicacies and shopping.
For Muslims, it’s a time of increased worship, religious reflection, charity and good deeds.
During Ramadan, local mosques and shrines are filled with devout Muslims who gather every day to offer prayers and seek blessings, forgiveness and mercy.
Socially, it often brings families and friends together in festive gatherings around meals to break their fast.
In New Delhi, the historic 17th century Jama mosque is getting ready to host thousands of Muslims during the holy month.
Shops and street vendors selling prayer items, clothes and jewellery are doing brisk business.
"With God’s grace, times are much better than before,” said shop keeper Muhammad Shakeel.
The Muslim dominated neighborhood in old Delhi is famous for its freshly-cooked Mughlai preparations and every evening the customers have been lining up for food in the area.
Ramadan ends with the festival of Eid al-Fitr.
