A statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky saying a deal to end the war with Russia was "very far away" has drawn a angry response from Donald Trump.
"This is the worst statement that could have been made by Zelensky, and America will not put up with it for much longer! It is what I was saying, this guy doesn’t want there to be Peace as long as he has America’s backing," President Trump wrote on his Truth Social media network.
During his latest news briefing Trump repeated his view that Zelensky "should be more appreciative" for the aid he has received from the US in the three years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. He said: “Maybe somebody doesn’t want to make a deal and if somebody doesn’t want to make a deal that person won’t be around very long”.
It follows angry scenes in the Oval Office last week when Trump and Vice-President JD Vance accused Zelensky of "gambling with World War Three" and failing to thank the American people for the support the United States had provided to Ukraine.
