STORYLINE:
Bulgarians joined residents in other European nations on Monday to express solidarity as Ukraine marked three years since the start of Russia’s invasion.

Among the participants of the event were some of the 60,000 Ukrainians who fled to the Balkan country.

Many of them carried photographs of their loved ones who had died in battle.

Ukraine’s Ambassador to Bulgaria Olesya Ilashchuk also participated and briefly addressed the crowd.

The peaceful march started at the government headquarters in Sofia, whose façade was lit up in the colors of the Bulgarian and Ukrainian flags.

The procession stopped in front of the Sofia office of the European Commission, where participants illuminated the building with their cell phones in unity and observed a minute of silence for the victims of the conflict.

Earlier on Monday, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov reaffirmed his country’s support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

He told European leaders, who were attending talks in Kyiv, that Ukraine’s future lies in the “European family and the transatlantic community”.
