STORYLINE:
Volunteers in Lima on Friday hosted a public ‘cat fair’ to fundraise for a pack of nearly 200 stray cats that reside in the central Kennedy Park.
The park in Miraflores was once a rodent safe haven. To end the infestation, a couple of cats were brought in.
A quarter of a century later, the story turned upside down.
Dalia Varillas, a volunteer of the Wanda Foundation, said people are still abandoning cats at the park, and despite efforts to give some of them into adoption, more are introduced constantly.
Tourist Aliisa Hautala, from Finland, said she had never seen a park like it.
The goal of Friday’s cat fair is to obtain funds to feed the cats for at least a month.
"Today, we are here in the park (Kennedy), doing a cat fair, where everyone who comes has products for pets and what we are looking for is that these fairs allow us to cover food expenses for 250 kittens approximately, with dry food and wet food," Viviana Meza, manager of human development of the Municipality of Miraflores, said.
The municipality of Miraflores has agreed to aid with some of the funds.
