STORYLINE:
Trucks were seen in the southern Gaza Strip area of Rafah on Friday carrying what looked to be prefabricated structures.

The entry of caravans, mobile homes and heavy machinery to remove the rubble is part of the ceasefire deal implemented since January 19 between Israel and Hamas.

Israel started to allow rubble-removing equipment like bulldozers into the Gaza Strip on Tuesday.

Journalists with The Associated Press saw two bulldozers clearing rubble in an area not far from the Gaza side of the Rafah border crossing.

Hamas said that Israel must allow more heavy machinery to enter the territory.

The World Bank, United Nations and the European Union are pointing to a formidable international reconstruction effort for Gaza, which they estimate will cost $53.2 billion.

The report identified almost $30 billion in damage as a result of the war — with nearly half of that due to destruction of homes.

The war has displaced an estimated 90% of Gaza’s population and since the ceasefire took effect last month, many displaced Palestinians have returned to find their former homes in ruins.

The report said Gaza would require about $20 billion for recovery and reconstruction needs over the next three years.

It also said an additional $33 billion will be needed in the long term, including funds to rebuild the territory’s social and health services and the battered economy.
