RR7538A TURKEY LIVING WITH THE QUAKES

(22 Sep 1975) RR7538A TURKEY LIVING WITH THE QUAKES

In 1975 earthquakes struck yet again in Eastern
Turkey, destroying the small town of Lice, causing
over 2,300 deaths and rendering thousands more
homeless. So far this century, 50,000 people have
fallen victim to the Anatolian Fault, which runs right
across Turkey. Many deaths, especially in the outlying
areas, have been the result of local building methods,
rough stones held together with mud. Government
agencies are trying to reduce future casualties by
encouraging different methods and learning to
predict the quakes. But villagers don’t like the new
houses and some refuse to live in them. This report
includes file film of four previous quakes and
interviews with Turkish seismological experts.
