RR7101 SCIENCE: BRAIN DRAIN IN REVERSE

(4 Jan 1971) RR7101 SCIENCE: BRAIN DRAIN IN REVERSE

During the 1960’s scientists from all over the world flocked to the United States, drawn by the prospect of higher salaries, better research facilities and wider opportunities in interesting jobs. This so-called "brain-drain" reached its peak in 1967, when 12,000 scientists left Europe to work in the booming aero-space industries of the United States. The scientists were guaranteed large houses, expensive cars, and all the luxuries of the most advanced society in the world. But now things are changing. The cut-back in the space programme has led to the closure of many factories and research centres and foreign scientists have been made redundant. Many of them are now contemplating a return to their own countries. Robert Hargreaves went to California, where he spoke to two British scientists – Roy Gordon and Ken Carline – about their life in America, their prospects in the new economic circumstances, and the possibility of returning to Britain.
