STORYLINE:
Rome’s diocese invited all the parishes and religious communities of the city to hold a communitarian silent prayer on Wednesday afternoon for the health of Pope Francis.

The prayer, meant to give to the Pontiff strength and hope, took place before the evening Vespers mass.

Small groups of Catholic faithful gathered in the hundreds of churches that are scattered all over Rome in the late afternoon for an hour-long silent prayer.

“Today is important because the Rome’s vicar asked all the parishes and religion communities to pray," said Father Fernando Laguna, Rector of the Argentine Church of Rome.

The Vatican said on Wednesday that Francis, who had part of one lung removed as a young man, was up, eating and had gotten out of bed after a tranquil night, a day after tests confirmed he had pneumonia in both lungs on top of asthmatic bronchitis.

Francis was admitted to the Gemelli hospital Friday after a weeklong bout of bronchitis worsened. On Monday, medical personnel determined that he was suffering from a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection, meaning a mix of viruses, bacteria and possibly other organisms had colonized in his respiratory tract. Late Tuesday, the Vatican said a chest CT scan showed the onset of bilateral pneumonia on top of asthmatic bronchitis, which is being treated with cortisone and antibiotics.

Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni has visited Pope Francis in the hospital and says he’s “alert and responsive” and full of good humor despite his pneumonia. The Vatican said Francis’ overall condition remained stationary, but that blood tests showed a “slight improvement” in key inflammation indices.
