STORYLINE:
One of Claudia Ortiz’s neighbors called her early Monday to say the street outside their Detroit home was filling up with water.

A few hours later, a deluge from a large water transmission main cascaded through narrow streets and into basements in the tight-knit, working-class neighborhood a few miles southwest of downtown.

“Sometimes, I think I’m still in shock,” Ortiz said Wednesday from her living room.

“I’m just scared,” she said.

About 2 a.m. Monday, a 54-inch steel water main suddenly burst yards from Ortiz’s front door, sending water coursing out of a widening crater in all directions. More than 90 people had to be helped from their homes.

The water main was built around 1930. Officials still were trying to determine what caused the huge pipe to burst, but temperatures were well below freezing at the time of the break.

The waters receded after the break was found and the water flow stopped.

Officials have said nearly 400 homes are in the emergency flood zone.

Linda Hoskins’ home also was without gas heat Wednesday. Her furnace and water heater likely were damaged beyond repair when her basement flooded.

“It was just pouring in. I mean, the only thing I can really say is: It was just like a movie,” she said.

The city has secured hotel rooms for people displaced by the flooding and without heat after furnaces became submerged. But like Ortiz and some others, Hoskins has chosen to remain home.

Crews have excavated around the site where the transmission main burst. According to officials, it is expected to take at least two weeks for repairs to be completed and the water main returned to service.

“It’s kind of hard to prepare for something like that,” said Jaime Carrillo (HEYE’-meh keh-REE’-yoh), who owns a business impacted by the flooding.
