STORY: Ivor Novello Awards
LOCATION: London
DATE: May 25, 2000
ROBBIE WILLIAMS and SIR PAUL McCARTNEY added yet more silverware to their heaving trophy cabinets when they were feted by the annual Ivor Novello Awards in London, yesterday (May 25).
Two time winner Williams, once a member of boy-band Take That, walked away with the prize for Best Song Musically And Lyrically for his hit single, ‘Strong’ with his co-writer Guy Chambers, while the former Beatle won the ultimate accolade from Britain’s music industry when he was named a fellow of the British Academy of Composers & Songwriters.
Robbie didn’t show at the prestigious awards ceremony, but he told BBC Radio 1 that he didn’t really like the song much though he was proud of the lyrics. The star was to busy on a photo shot to attend. " I couldn’t be with all the industry bods, sitting at a table talking nonsense to people I don’t know," he said.
But Travis flew in from America and said that they didn’t want to miss the awards. TRAVIS’ Fran Healy scooped two gongs including the prestigious Songwriter Of The Year award as well as Best Contemporary Song for the Travis track ‘Why Does It Always Rain On Me’.
The internationally respected 45th Ivor Novello Awards for British songwriters, composers and music publishers took place at London’s luxury Grosvenor House hotel, Park Lane, and was sponsored by the Performing Rights Society (PRS). It’s not quite as glitzy and celeb-packed as a lot of other award ceremonies, but it is seen by those in the industry as one of the most important of the year.
Elsewhere among the winners were William Orbit and Madonna for the song ‘Beautiful Stranger’ which claimed the PRS Most Performed Work award. Meanwhile, songwriters Mark Hill and Craig David collected The Ivors Dance Award for the Artful Dodger hit ‘Re-Rewind’.
Pet Shop Boys Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe took the prize for PRS Outstanding Contribution To British Music and Sir Paul McCartney won the prestigious Academy Fellowship award.
Reformed “nutty boys” Madness, best known for the hits “Baggy Trousers,” “House of Fun” and “Night Boat to Cairo,” were given an award for their outstanding song collection.
The score to the James Bond film “The World Is Not Enough,” composed by David Arnold, was named best original film score, and U.S. teen sensation Christina Aguilera’s “Genie In A Bottle” was named international hit of the year. It was written by Pam Sheyne, David Frank and Steve Kipner.
No-one could have made a bigger entrance than Sir Elton John. Decked out in diamond-studded shades he presented Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe with an award for lifetime achievement. But he didn’t go home empty handed either – he picked up an award of his own for his work on ‘The Lion King,’ co-written by Sir Elton John and currently wowing audiences in London’s West End,which was awarded the prize for international achievement in musical theater.
