The key to maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait lies in adhering to the One China principle and resolutely opposing Taiwan independence. It is China’s consistent position that cooperation between China and the Cook Islands does not target a third party and should not be disrupted by a third party.”

STORYLINE:
China rejected Monday a joint statement by the U.S., Japan and South Korea in which the three countries reaffirmed their support for peace in the Taiwan Strait and called for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul met on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference for the first time since U.S. President Donald Trump’s return to the White House.
In a joint statement released after their meeting, the three diplomats reiterated their opposition to any attempts to unilaterally change the status quo across the Taiwan Strait.
Asked about the statement at a daily news briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun reasserted China’s claim over Taiwan, saying the country was “firmly opposed to certain countries forming small groupings, interfering in China’s internal affairs (and) attacking and smearing China.”
The current law only allows people to list their nation as their place of origin, and Japan does not recognize Taiwan as a nation.
