RR8051/3 SOUTH AFRICA : WILD LIFE CUTS 2 OF 2

(19 Dec 1980) Background to Story: Great efforts have been made in recent years to protect the
world’s threatened wildlife. In Africa especially, dozens of wildlife reserves
have been established to protect animals as their natural environment is
increasingly cut back by the needs of man. But with soaring prices on the
international market for ivory and rhino horn, poaching has become a bigger threat
than anything else to the elephant and rhinoceros. Even game reserves are not safe
from poachers equipped with modern automatic weapons. But a new game park in South
Africa’s Black homeland of Bophuthatswana is aiming to keep all the poachers out,
and even increase the numbers of wildlife inside.
